Rekenreks provide a powerful visual model of 10, 20, and 100 for students to manipulate in their development of basic number sense. The Rekenrek is ideal for beginning counting and provides hands-on experiences for students as they move to addition and subtraction. Through examples and activities you’ll learn to use the Rekenrek as a hands-on tool for counting as well as a variety of operational strategies including Doubles, Partners to 10, Missing Addends, Subtraction as Take-Away and more.
In this two-hour course you will learn how the Rekenrek can be used to reinforce key concepts:
• VIsual Models of 5 and 10
• Composing Numbers
• Strategic Addition and Subtraction Strategies
• Modeling Numbers to 100 with the 100-Bead Rekenrek
The course combines videos and activities using hands-on or virtual manipulatives. In addition, free activities are included that you can use right away!
