Why teach with Ten-Frames?

Ten-frames provide a tactile experience that helps students develop basic number sense. Students build their understanding through composition and decomposition of numbers within 5, 10, 20 and beyond. In this two-hour course you will learn how ten-frames can be used as a model for representing numbers and for teaching beginning and multi-digit addition and subtraction. For each of these concepts you will learn a variety of strategies including:

• Modeling Teen Numbers

• Make a Ten

• Find a Double

• Subtraction Using "Get to Ten"

• Modeling Multi-Digit Addition and Subtraction

The course combines videos and activities using hands-on or virtual manipulatives. In addition, free activities are included that you can use right away!

Dr. Sue Looney is the founder of Looney Math Consulting and Same But Different Math. She is passionate about making math joyful for all learners, and is especially interested in early childhood mathematics. She has worked as a teacher, a district director, and as an adjunct professor of early childhood mathematics at Boston University.
